Description

VMKC 48015 Mirage 5SDE-2 “Horus upgrade” conversion

In 1973 the Egyptian Air Force ordered -through Salam contract-  32 Mirage 5 SDE, a variant of the Cyrano radar equipped IIIE, a purchase backed -according to most sources-by funds provided by Saudi Arabia. The delivery of these aircraft started in 1974 and were completed in 1976. Additional purchases led to the delivery of a total of 82 Mirages.

A modernization program started in 1998 to update the avionics, with the updated airframes redesignated as Mirage 5SDE Horus or 5SDE-2. Then, in 2005, a follow up major update program by SAGEM was announced as the “Horus” program: it featured Chinese made RWR sensors in the nose and tail, a SAGEM navigation/attack avionics suite, a Sigma 95N Gyrolaser GPS with digital map generator, smart display HUD, and an Iris FLIR sensor identical to that fitted to the Pakistani Mirages of the ROSE II/III upgrade. Finally, while a set of MBDA-Alkan chaff and flare dispenser was allegedly fitted to the aircraft, photographic evidence shows that the aircraft were fitted with the AWC MOHAFIZ Counter Measures suite during the overhaul of the aircraft performed at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in the early 2000s.
